Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday extended his full support to the Indian shooting team and wished them luck as they departed for an 80-day tour which will culminate with the Tokyo Olympics in August.

A 15-member strong Indian contingent departed for Croatia where they will prepare and participate in a couple of tournaments before going directly to Tokyo for the Summer Games. The athletes are shifting base overseas and going abroad to train due to the coronavirus crisis in India.

High-performance coach of the Indian shooting team, Suma Shirur posted a picture of the Indian contingent holding up the national flag just before their departure for Zagreb. She also tagged the Rijiju in her post.

“With a ‘Bharat Mata ki Jay’ we get ready to depart for Croatia. From there straight to #Tokyo2020 Olympics. 80 days in total. The Indian Shooting team needs your blessings to give their best,” Suma Shirur tweeted.

Rijiju replied on the tweet, and urged everybody to religiously obey the Covid-19 protocols of whichever country they travel.

“Safe journey! Never break the Covid-19 protocols of other countries. Focus on training, take care and stay safe. Will provide all necessary support to our athletes and the coaches. All the best,” Rijiju replied.

The Indian shooting team will undergo seven-day quarantine period after reaching Zagreb following which they will begin training and taking part in the competitions. All the Olympic-bound shooters have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

In Croatia, the shooters will take part in the European Championships in Osijek (May 20 to June 6) and the combined ISSF World Cup (June 22 to July 3) in the same city. The team will fly to Tokyo on June 17, a week in the lead up to the Games.
