Centre supports over 18.84 lakh EVs under FAME schemes: Minister

EV Charging

India’s push towards clean mobility continues to gain momentum as the Centre has extended support to over 18.84 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) through its flagship FAME India schemes, according to a written statement presented in the Lok Sabha.

Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, revealed that a total of 18,84,905 EVs were supported till June 30, 2024, under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) initiatives. Of these, 16,29,600 vehicles were supported under the ongoing FAME-II scheme, while 2,55,305 EVs were backed during the FAME-I phase (2015–2019).

EV Charging Infrastructure Expansion

In addition to supporting EV adoption, the FAME-II scheme also emphasized the development of EV charging infrastructure across the country. As of June 30, a total of 9,332 public charging stations (PCS) were sanctioned with an allocation of Rs 912.50 crore. Out of these, 8,885 EV charging stations have already been installed across various locations, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, to ensure broader accessibility.

Under FAME-I, the Centre sanctioned approximately 520 charging stations with a total outlay of Rs 43 crore, further strengthening the foundational infrastructure for EV adoption.

Objectives of the FAME-II Scheme

The FAME-II scheme, which ran from 2019 to 2024, was designed with multiple strategic goals:

  • Accelerating EV adoption through market creation and demand aggregation.

  • Boosting domestic manufacturing of EVs and their components.

  • Promoting Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) and hybrid vehicles in India.

  • Establishing a sustainable and globally competitive EV ecosystem.

  • Supporting India’s commitment to low carbon emissions, as outlined in the COP21 climate agreement.

National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020

The FAME schemes fall under the larger umbrella of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020, which provides a strategic roadmap to drive the widespread adoption and local manufacturing of electric vehicles in India.

Launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in 2015, the NEMMP and FAME initiatives aim to transform India into a major EV manufacturing hub, aligning with the country’s sustainable development and climate change goals.
