Shree Cement Commissions 6 MW Solar Plant in Roorkee, Scaling Up Renewable Energy Commitment

Shree Cement Solar Plant

Shree Cement Ltd., one of India’s leading cement manufacturers, has commissioned a new 6.0 MWp solar power plant at its Roorkee unit in Uttarakhand, further reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy and carbon reduction as part of its RE100 and decarbonization goals.

The newly inaugurated solar facility is strategically located adjacent to Shree Cement’s existing cement operations in Roorkee. With this addition, the solar energy capacity at the site has expanded sevenfold—from 1.0 MWp to 7.0 MWp. At the national level, Shree Cement’s total solar capacity now stands at 293.5 MWp, solidifying its leadership in sustainable manufacturing within the Indian cement industry.

“Sustainability is embedded in everything we do. The commissioning of the Roorkee solar plant is a testament to our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and building long-term energy resilience. Projects like this not only benefit the environment but also create local jobs and contribute to inclusive economic growth,” said Neeraj Akhoury, Managing Director, Shree Cement.

Driving Clean Energy and Carbon Offset

Developed with an estimated capital investment of ₹16 crore, the solar plant is designed to reduce dependency on grid power while generating clean energy on-site. It is expected to offset approximately 6,500 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, making a measurable contribution to India’s climate action goals.

This initiative supports Shree Cement’s broader push for energy self-sufficiency and aligns with the company’s long-term vision of building a resilient, sustainable, and low-carbon growth model. It also contributes to employment generation and regional economic upliftment in Uttarakhand, emphasizing the company’s focus on inclusive development alongside environmental responsibility.

Cement Industry’s Transition to Clean Energy

As India’s cement industry plays a critical role in infrastructure development, its decarbonization journey has come under the spotlight. Shree Cement’s aggressive renewable energy ramp-up—through both solar and waste heat recovery—places it among the frontrunners in aligning industrial growth with environmental stewardship.

The commissioning of the Roorkee solar facility marks another strategic milestone in Shree Cement’s clean energy journey, further empowering its operations to become more energy-efficient, climate-resilient, and future-ready.
