In a significant step towards boosting electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, Tata Elxsi, a global leader in design and technology services, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Infineon Technologies, a world-leading semiconductor solutions provider. This strategic collaboration aims to develop application-ready, cost-optimised, and safety-compliant EV solutions tailored specifically for the Indian automotive landscape.
Driving India’s EV Growth with Targeted Solutions
The partnership comes at a time when India’s EV market is witnessing exponential growth, with electric vehicle sales rising by 25–30% year-on-year in 2024. Notably, electric two- and three-wheeler sales alone have surged by 28%, underscoring the country’s rapid transition towards sustainable mobility.
The Tata Elxsi–Infineon collaboration is set to address this rising demand by accelerating the development of automotive-grade EV subsystems that are aligned with stringent safety standards, including ASIL-D (Automotive Safety Integrity Level D) compliance under the ISO 26262 Functional Safety standards.
Key Focus Areas of the Collaboration
The partnership combines Tata Elxsi’s system design, integration, and validation expertise with Infineon’s cutting-edge semiconductor technologies, including:
-
Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based components
-
Advanced microcontrollers
-
Integrated circuits (ICs)
Together, the companies will co-develop:
-
High-voltage inverters for traction and auxiliary systems
-
Scalable battery management systems (BMS)
-
Bi-directional onboard chargers
-
High-voltage thermal management systems
These solutions will cater to India’s fast-growing mobility segments, including two-wheelers (2W), three-wheelers (3W), passenger vehicles (PV), and commercial vehicles (CV), with potential expansion into eVTOL, energy storage, and off-highway sectors in the future.
Leadership Speaks
Nambi Ganesh, Head of Automotive at Tata Elxsi, emphasized the importance of the partnership:
“Several of our current EV solutions are already built on Infineon SoCs and components. This MoU strengthens our collaboration by creating a tighter system-level alignment, enabling us to deliver production-ready, automotive standards-compliant platforms with faster turnaround times to address India’s unique market needs.”
Kenneth Lim, Senior Vice President, Automotive, Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific, added:
“This partnership is a pivotal step in supporting India’s ambitious electrification goals. By integrating Tata Elxsi’s design expertise with Infineon’s advanced semiconductor technologies, we are set to accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge EV systems that meet the highest safety and performance standards.”
Supporting India’s National EV Targets
This joint initiative directly supports the national electrification goals set by NITI Aayog, which aim for:
-
80% electrification of two- and three-wheelers
-
70% electrification of commercial vehicles
by the year 2030.
The collaboration is poised to catalyze faster EV adoption across India by delivering scalable, efficient, and safety-certified EV solutions that can meet the country’s growing demand for sustainable mobility.
