NPCI Unveils ‘UPI One World’ Wallet for Global Travelers

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched the ‘UPI One World’ wallet, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing inbound travelers from all nations with a seamless digital payment experience in India. This new service is designed to enhance the ease of exploring India’s cultural and natural attractions. Additionally, it will be available to delegates attending the World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi from July 21-31, 2024.

By offering the UPI One World wallet, NPCI enables international visitors to immerse themselves in India’s rich heritage and diverse experiences while benefiting from the convenience of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments. Originally introduced during the G20 summit in India, this wallet now extends its reach to travelers from a broader range of countries. It eliminates the need for cash and simplifies foreign exchange transactions, reflecting the innovative “made in India” technology.

Available through authorized PPI issuers at airports, hotels, and other key locations, the wallet can be acquired following a KYC process with a passport and valid visa. Special provisions will be made for delegates at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the venue for the World Heritage Committee meeting. Once issued, the wallet can be loaded with cash or other payment methods.

Travelers can use the UPI One World app to make payments by scanning QR codes at merchant locations, with any remaining balance transferable back to the original payment source in line with foreign exchange regulations. This initiative, developed in collaboration with IDFC First Bank and Transcorp International Limited under the guidance of the Reserve Bank of India, highlights NPCI’s commitment to advancing the global digital payments ecosystem.

NPCI spokesperson commented, “We are thrilled to offer UPI experience to the international guests visiting India through UPI One World. This move aims to enhance the experience for visitors by equipping them with UPI, the most preferred payment choice among Indians. International travellers can organize their financial needs using UPI One World. It allows for convenient loading and enables the transfer of any unused balance back to the original payment source. By enabling foreign travellers to experience the real-time payments system developed by India, we are taking a significant stride towards creating a more interconnected global digital payments ecosystem.”

This initiative underscores India’s leadership in digital payments and invites the international community to engage with the country’s successful Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Notably, in June 2024, UPI facilitated nearly 14 billion transactions valued at INR 20.07 trillion (~USD 240 billion).
