Indian Army received First Hydrogen Bus in Push for Green Transportation

Displaying a strong commitment to environmental responsibility, the Indian Army has joined forces with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to explore the potential of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards cleaner and greener transportation solutions for the military.

The partnership was solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), and Mr Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. During the ceremony, the Indian Army received its first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, marking the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership focused on innovation and sustainable transportation advancements.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology: A Clean and Efficient Alternative

Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology offers a compelling alternative to traditional fuels by converting hydrogen gas into electricity through an electrochemical process. This process emits only water vapor as a byproduct, making it a zero-emission solution.

The pilot Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus boasts a seating capacity of 37 passengers and promises an impressive range of 250-300 kilometers on a single 30 kg tank of hydrogen fuel.

This initiative builds upon the Indian Army’s dedication to environmental stewardship. Notably, on March 21st, 2023, the Army became the first government entity to partner with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited to install Green Hydrogen based Microgrid Power Plants along the Northern Borders. A pilot project in Chushul utilizes a 200 Kilo Watt Green Hydrogen Microgrid to provide clean electricity to troops stationed in harsh terrains and extreme weather conditions.

The collaboration between the Indian Army and IOCL on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology reflects a shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. This partnership has the potential to pave the way for a cleaner and greener future for military transportation.
