OpenAI, the mastermind behind ChatGPT, has ventured into the Indian landscape with its first hire, appointing Pragya Mishra as the head of Government relations. This significant move, as reported by Bloomberg, occurs amidst India’s ongoing elections, where the new administration’s decisions will significantly influence artificial intelligence regulations.
While the official announcement of Misra’s appointment is pending, sources reveal that the Microsoft Corporation-backed company has brought Pragya Misra on board to lead public policy affairs and partnerships in India. At 39 years old, Misra brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles at Truecaller AB and Meta Platforms Inc. She is anticipated to assume her new role at OpenAI by the end of the month.
This recruitment underscores the generative AI company’s commitment to advocating for favorable regulations as governments worldwide grapple with overseeing the rapid advancements in technology.
Since July 2021, Misra has served as the director of public affairs at Truecaller, where she collaborated closely with government ministries, stakeholders, investors, and media partners to advance the company’s agenda.
Before her tenure at Truecaller, Misra spent three years at Meta Platforms Inc., where she spearheaded WhatsApp’s campaign against misinformation in 2018. Her professional journey also encompasses roles at Ernst & Young and the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi, reflecting her diverse experience across various sectors.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Misra earned her MBA from the International Management Institute in 2012. She holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Delhi University and has completed a Diploma in Bargaining and Negotiations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
