Former Pearson India MD Deepak Mehrotra Joins Byju’s Aakash as CEO Amidst Financial and Operational Challenges

Deepak Mehrotra, previously the managing director at Pearson India, is set to take on the role of chief executive officer at Byju’s test prep firm Aakash, according to a report by Moneycontrol.

Mehrotra’s appointment comes at a challenging time for Byju’s, which is reportedly facing financial constraints impacting regular operations, as mentioned in the Moneycontrol report. Additionally, the company is dealing with various issues involving stakeholders such as its board, auditors, investors, employees, and government bodies like the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, Board of Control for Cricket in India, and the Enforcement Directorate, as highlighted in the same report.

During his tenure as MD at Pearson India, Mehrotra oversaw the management of Pearson’s education portfolio in the country. He focused on driving growth across three key verticals – school, higher education, and vocational – with a particular emphasis on leveraging digital tools to enhance learner outcomes.

Mehrotra’s professional journey includes roles at prominent companies such as Asian Paints, Coca-Cola India, Bharti Airtel Limited, and Micromax Informatics. Notably, as the regional vice president at Coca-Cola India, he led the company’s bottling operations in the South Region and Maldives, serving as a profit center head with a significant turnover of Rs. 740 crore. Additionally, he managed external affairs in the South during the pesticide controversy.
