Luminous Power Technologies’ ‘Solar Spectrum of New India’ research reveals mixed perceptions for solar energy adoption

A new study by Luminous Power Technologies sheds light on a fascinating paradox in India’s clean energy landscape. Despite growing awareness of alternative energy sources and government initiatives promoting solar power, there’s a significant gap between intention and action.

The “Solar Spectrum of New India” study surveyed over 4,300 people across major and non-major cities. The findings reveal that while 85% of respondents believe their city is suitable for installing solar rooftop systems, a staggering 97% haven’t adopted this clean energy solution.

Barriers Holding Back Solar Power Adoption

The study identified three key roadblocks hindering wider adoption of solar power in India:

  • Accessibility: Nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents felt that solar solutions were simply inaccessible to them. This could be due to factors like a lack of awareness about the installation process or limited options for purchasing solar panels and equipment.

  • Shortage of Skilled Labor: The survey found that 90% of respondents believe specialized skills are necessary for proper installation of rooftop solar systems. However, almost half (45%) fear there’s a lack of skilled labor available in their local area. This highlights the crucial need to bridge the skill gap in the solar power sector.

  • Perceived Cost Concerns: While 58% acknowledge the long-term cost-effectiveness of solar energy, initial installation costs remain a significant concern for 59% of respondents. Interestingly, 55% believe solar power is slightly more expensive upfront compared to traditional energy sources, and a further 37% perceive it as considerably more expensive. These findings suggest a need for increased awareness about financial schemes and options available to ease the upfront financial burden for consumers interested in adopting solar power.

Industry Response and Moving Forward

Luminous Power Technologies, recognizing these challenges, is taking a multi-pronged approach to address them. They’ve partnered with NBFCs and fintech lenders to offer affordable financing solutions, making solar power a more accessible option for a wider range of consumers. Additionally, their impactful CSR initiative, “Solar PV Installation Training,” aims to bridge the skill gap by upskilling individuals to become certified solar technicians.

Preeti Bajaj, MD & CEO of Luminous Power Technologies, emphasizes the importance of understanding consumer perceptions: “This research helps us understand the evolving consumer landscape and their limitations while recognizing their openness towards adopting new energy sources.”

The Path to a Sustainable Future

The “Solar Spectrum of New India” study underscores a critical opportunity for India. By addressing accessibility concerns, fostering a skilled workforce, and promoting awareness about financial solutions, the country can unlock its vast potential for solar energy adoption. This shift towards clean energy will pave the way for a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for India.
