Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi Appointed as India’s Next Chief of Army Staff

In a late-night announcement on Tuesday, the government officially declared Lt Gen Dwivedi as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). Lt Gen Dwivedi, currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), will assume the position of the 29th Chief of the Indian Army on June 30th, as outlined in a government notification issued on Tuesday night.

Commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF) on December 15, 1984, Lt Gen Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, sharing this distinction with the current Indian Navy Chief Adm Dinesh Tripathi. Notably, this marks a rare instance where two alumni of the same Sainik School are heading their respective services.

Before his role as VCOAS, Lt Gen Dwivedi served as the Northern Army Commander from 2022 to February 2024, overseeing complex situations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh amidst tensions with China. He has commanded the 9 Corps based in Yol and led Assam Rifles formations in the north-east as both a Brigadier and a Major General.

Throughout his distinguished 39-year career, Lt Gen Dwivedi has held various staff appointments at Headquarters, including roles in Armoured Brigade, Mountain Division, and Strike Corps. As an instructor at the Indian Military Academy and Army War College, he has contributed significantly to shaping future military leaders. In his capacity as DCOAS (IS&C), he prioritized technological advancements and initiated specialized training courses focused on China for senior officers.

Lt Gen Dwivedi’s international experience includes deployments to Somalia as part of HQ UNOSOM II and serving as Military Advisor to the Government of Seychelles. He has undergone training at prestigious institutions such as the US Army War College, earning accolades including the title of ‘Distinguished Fellow’.
